by Jurgen Backhaus

In 1877, the Prussian Minister of Culture, on utilization of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Berlin, expelled Dr Eugen Du¨hring’s venia legendi, the authorization to instruct, and the related status of Privatdozent. This fairly remarkable act at one of the world’s overwhelming colleges, which included still-today popular figures, and which pulled in boundless consideration, will be contemplated as a case in this paper. The endeavor is to see, to the degree this is conceivable, what truly happened – for which some relevant clarification is vital – and whether, by the gauges of 1877, the remotion was both lawful and honest to goodness. Utilizing a basic form of the last polarity (see Creifelds, 1996, ”Legalita¨ t”, p. 770), I mean by lawful, as per the current laws, both ”in letter and soul”, and by authentic, as per a moral standardizing standard, ideally that of the heroes.
