J.R.R. Tolkien’s the Fellowship of the Ring – September, 1985
The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien’s three-volume epic, is set in the fictional universe of Middle-earth – home to numerous interesting creatures, and most strikingly hobbits, a peace-adoring “little individuals,” sprightly and bashful. Since its unique British distribution in 1954-55, the adventure has spellbound perusers of any age. It is on the double a great myth and a current children’s story. Pundit Michael Straight has hailed it as one of the “not very many works of virtuoso in late writing.” Middle-earth is a world responsive to artists, researchers, kids, and all other individuals of positive attitude. Donald Barr has depicted it as “a cleaned morning world, and a ringing bad dream world…especially sunlit, and shadowed by dangers extremely basic, of an exceptionally uncompounded haziness.” The account of ths world is one of high and gallant experience. Barr contrasted it with Beowulf, C.S. Lewis to Orlando Furioso, W.H. Auden to The Thirty-nine Steps. Truth be told the adventure is sui generis – a triumph of creative ability which springs to life inside its own system and all alone terms.
